Volunteen

Looking for a fun and engaging volunteer opportunity to fulfill a school commitment, build a job or college resume, or to serve your community? Washoe County Library System offers volunteer opportunities for teens ages 14 to 18.

The Volunteen Program is a remote/virtual volunteer opportunity for teens who have busy schedules or who may not be able to volunteer in person. Build skills and engage talents all while promoting and learning about library resources and services. Earn up to 20 volunteer hours!

How it Works: Digital Version

In this self-paced challenge, you pick the badges you like and complete the associated tasks to earn volunteer time.

What do you need to do?

  • To sign up for the program you will have to create a Beanstack account if you do not already have one. Once you have signed up, you will have access to join the Volunteen Challenge.
  • A volunteer coordinator will be notified that you have joined the challenge. They will send you the volunteer forms via email and start the orientation process. Volunteer applications must be signed by the teen participant and parent or guardian.
  • Once you have completed the paperwork, the volunteer coordinator will give you a code to complete the Welcome Email badge that will give you access to all badges (except the part-two badges). Pick a badge you would like to do and finish all the activities associated with that badge.
  • Once you have completed 20 hours' worth of badges, your volunteer coordinator will give you a certificate of completion.
  • Understand that the work you submit to complete badges for the Volunteen program may be used by the Washoe County Library System. By submitting your work, you authorize Washoe County Library System to post your work on the library's website and various social media platforms. You also affirm that your submission is 100 percent your original work.

How it Works: Paper Version

You will receive a workbook that consists of activities (badges) that are worth one to two hours of volunteer time. You pick the badges that appeal to you and then complete the associated tasks. This program is self-paced.

What do you need to do?

  • Fill out the online application or visit your branch of choice and ask for the volunteer coordinator to start the application process at the library. Complete the paperwork and start the orientation process. Volunteer applications must be signed by the teen participant and parent or guardian.
  • Pick a badge and finish all the activities associated with that badge.
  • When you complete five badges, contact your library’s volunteer coordinator to arrange a time to review your work. Some badges give an option to create a 3D object. If you chose to make a 3D creation, please show it to the volunteer coordinator at this meeting as proof of completion.
  • Once you have completed 20 hours' worth of badges, your volunteer coordinator will give you a certificate of completion and a pin.
  • Understand that the work you submit to complete badges for the Volunteen program may be used by the Washoe County Library System. By submitting your work, you authorize Washoe County Library System to post your work on the library's website and various social media platforms. You also affirm that your submission is 100 percent your original work.
