Story Time
All Washoe County Library early literacy programs feature stories, fingerplays, and wiggle action as part of the experience to encourage a love of books, stimulate thinking, and promote feelings of self-assurance.
Which story time is right for my family?
- Baby Story Time - For children ages 0-18 months.
- Toddler Time - For children 18 months to 3 years.
- Preschool Story Time - For children 3 to 6 years.
- Bilingual Story Time - For children of all ages with stories and songs in English and other languages.
- Family Story Time - For children of all ages with a focus on enjoying literacy and language as a family.
- P.J. Story Time - Family Story Time with a bedtime theme…come in your pajamas and slippers.
- STEAM Story Time - Family Story Time with an emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math concepts.
Story Time introduces children to skills practiced in school, like:
- Taking turns
- Being part of a group
- Raising hands
- Following directions
- Cooperation with and kindness toward others
- Familiarity with a routine
Story Time reinforces early literacy skills through music, fingerplays, rhymes, movement, and other activities:
- Vocabulary - Knowing the names of things.
- Print Motivation - Being interested in and enjoying books.
- Print Awareness - Noticing print, how to handle a book, how to follow words on a page.
- Narrative Skills - Being able to describe things and events and tell stories.
- Letter Knowledge - Knowing letters are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds.
- Phonological Awareness - Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.
