A welcome from Library Director Lisa McClure
Hurray for summer! I am so excited to be spending this summer with you, my first in Washoe County! I have been involved with summer learning for many years, helping students, families, adults, teachers, community organizations, childcare groups, camps, and more work together to solve the problem of summer learning loss.
Many parents are surprised to learn that children can lose more than two months of reading and two and a half months of math progress per year when they do not engage in reading/learning over the summer break. While classmates from more affluent families or neighborhoods may increase proficiency scores during a summer full of vacations, enriching classes, camps, and museum visits, many low-income, disadvantaged, and other vulnerable students will lose significant skills, ultimately ending up a total of two and a half to three years behind their friends by the fifth grade — even when they learn at the same exact rate during the school year!
I am happy to report that the skilled staff of Washoe County Library System are here to help your families achieve summer learning success! We're excited to kick off the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, which runs from June 1 through July 31. This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story,” and readers of all ages are invited to sign up to log their reading and earn prizes. More information can be found on pages 12–13.
There are several exciting celebrations throughout the library system this season. First up is Nevada Reading Week, with the mission of “inspiring and instilling the joy and importance of reading across Nevada,” on March 2–6 (see page 14).
Reading is patriotic! This July, we’re excited to mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Please join us in celebrating America250 Nevada, a statewide commemoration of the nation’s founding. You’ll find information about book recommendations, a film series, and community puzzles on page 6.
Throughout July, we’re partnering with Artown to bring a wide variety of art-focused events to the library. Learn more about Artown events and library gallery exhibits on page 7. And be sure to stop by any Washoe County Library location to pick up an Artown little book, while supplies last.
The Northwest Reno Library is undergoing heating and cooling system replacement and will remain closed throughout the project, with an anticipated reopening planned for late summer. We appreciate the community’s support during this temporary closure. For more information, see page 5.

What appealed to you about Washoe County Library System?
I am a fierce champion of librarianship, passionately dedicated to public libraries and the communities they serve. As a public library director, my goal is to engage and serve my community, to empower my staff to deliver community outcomes, to act with honesty and integrity, and to transform my library into a relevant and essential service for the public good.
Libraries transform lives, and my job is to transform library systems to ensure community success. I believe that public libraries are the greatest gift in a modern democracy, and, as a library director, it’s both my pleasure and my responsibility to deliver that gift, and to ensure a return on investment to the community members who bless us with their trust, their families, and their tax dollars.
When I researched the library, the position, and the community of Washoe County, I saw a number of articles and videos that mentioned the “beleaguered Washoe County Library.” In my career, I have always chosen positions that allowed me to serve great need, to enrich vulnerable populations, and to better the lives of every single member of my community, so I was intrigued by what that statement implied. I saw a library that, despite the dedicated work of its staff, its board, and the gracious support of its community, has battled to successfully serve its customers in an environment of shrinking budgets, distracting conflicts, and task-oriented goals. As a transformationist, I thought, I can make a real difference here!
My entire approach will be outcomes-based. A public library doesn’t exist to build a successful library; the library exists to build a successful community! Outputs — how many people come through the library door or check out our books — aren’t really important, as there could be an event outside and we have a handy bathroom, or the books remain unread! When public libraries are guided by strategic outcomes, we develop staffing, programs, services, resources, spaces, technologies, and events that improve community lives academically, professionally, economically, recreationally, socially, culturally, healthily, environmentally, politically, and more! I want to inspire and empower my staff to increase outcomes, so that we’re helping parents become their child’s first, best teacher, we’re supporting the schools’ efforts to increase grade-level reading proficiencies, we’re helping teens move on to college and career, we’re helping adults be fully employed and engaged with life, and we’re helping seniors find new purpose.
And, like Liam Neeson, I have a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a long and illustrious career in public librarianship (LOL), that I now offer in service to the wonderful people of Washoe County!
What first drew you to library work?
I have a Master of Arts in English Literature as well as the Master of Information and Library Studies. I was first interested in becoming a professor, teaching and turning people on to Shakespeare and Chaucer. But that commitment to learning was bogged down by the race to scholarship — to publish or perish — and took me away from the students I wanted to inspire.
I did a lot of research at the academic library, and I could see that the mission of librarianship was rooted in that inspiration to learn and engage with the world around you. A student comes with an idea for a report that they’ve been assigned, and the librarian says, “Look at all the ways you could pursue this topic that are so exciting! Let’s find something exciting for you!” Librarianship makes discovery real and possible.
After earning my MILS, I started my career as a school librarian to be home more with my daughter, but was thrilled to move on to public librarianship when she got a few years older. I quickly found that the role I most wanted was in management, because I felt that I could better effect change that would help my community thrive.
I first pursued youth management in Hartford, Connecticut, the second poorest city in the United States, which was a deep dive into vulnerable populations. One of my first efforts was a marketing program that declared that libraries were free, that we would not share customer information with authorities, and that we could give children and families a jumpstart in life. That deeply satisfying work in vulnerable populations really drove my career decisions, and I pursued management positions around the country in public libraries both large and small that allowed me to transform lives — what I hope to do for Washoe County.
What can patrons expect to see?
More programs and services that delight, educate, and inform. Washoe County offers amazing opportunities to its residents but also faces large disparities in income and education. To get positive outcomes, we’ll focus on systemwide quality and branch equity, enabling any customer in Washoe County to enter any library and have the same quality experience and opportunity to have their lives transformed.
What’s a book you like to recommend?
Not Quite Dead Yet by Holly Jackson. In this thrilling mystery, a young woman barely survives a vicious murder attempt, only to find out that she will die in one week. She pulls herself together to solve her own murder — fighting her deepest fears, discovering a potential love that might never be realized, and coming to terms with family and friends that may have secretly adored, envied, feared, or hated her.
We read books to transport us out of our own world, discovering the answers to our own mysteries as we solve those of another. All of our heroine’s hopes and dreams are crystallized into that one week, with emotions so strong that the book becomes real to us, and we share the intensity of her experience and ultimate transformation.
What’s a library service you wish more people knew about?
The Lucky Day collection. People look online, and their book isn’t available for months, but they don’t know that they could walk in and possibly find their favorite author’s new book sitting right there on the shelf! Washoe County Library offers so much to its community, and I am delighted to be a part of its glorious future!

Washoe County Library looks to the future with new Director Lisa McClure
Washoe County Library System is pleased to welcome a new director to the helm. Lisa McClure moved into the director’s office in April. Before coming to Northern Nevada, her 30-year career in libraries led her from Michigan to Hartford, Connecticut; Broward County, Florida; and Linden, New Jersey.
She relocated to Washoe County for the position. “I find it incredibly beautiful,” she said. “I enjoy my drive to work because the highways are elevated, and you get that circle of mountains around you.”
She says throughout her career, she has been focused on “exciting program and service innovations that keep libraries at the forefront of customer service trends, digital developments, and social justice.”
Over the course of her first few weeks, she has been meeting with Washoe County Library System staff and exploring the system’s 12 library locations. “I’ve met so many wonderful people here. The staff here are warm and engaging and dedicated to their work.”

Northwest Reno Library temporarily closes for repairs
With the arrival of summer, the Northwest Reno Library is undergoing crucial work on its aging roof and outdated heating and cooling systems. The library will continue to be closed to the public for this vital construction project. Current projections estimate a late summer reopening.
Returns and donations cannot be accepted at the Northwest Reno Library during the closure. Library materials can be returned to any other Washoe County Library location. For the most up-to-date news and information, please visit our website, washoecountylibrary.us.
During the closure, Northwest Reno Library team members will be supporting other libraries. Patrons in the northwest Reno area are invited to visit the Verdi Community Library & Nature Center on Tuesdays from 3 to 6 pm, and on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 6 pm.
Staffers are excited to present a new summer program during the shutdown offering crafts and activities for families at the Verdi Community Library. Adventure Hour will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 4 pm. Staffers are looking forward to presenting a variety of activities that support the Summer Reading Challenge.
“While we will miss seeing patrons in the Northwest Reno Library, we look forward to seeing them at the other libraries,” said Kristin Reinke, Branch Manager. “We hope Adventure Hour at the Verdi Community Library & Nature Center can offer patrons a new experience, with educational and fun activities this summer.”

On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted “the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,” now commonly known as the Declaration of Independence, the document with which 13 colonies severed their loyalty to the British crown, and by which a new country, the United States of America, began.
This summer marks 250 years since this momentous occasion, and businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies across the country are commemorating the occasion in a variety of ways.
At Washoe County Library, we’re celebrating America250 Nevada with special events, like the American Stories film series at the North Valleys Library and "My America" community puzzles at several branches, but we’re also going to celebrate by practicing one of our most fundamental rights, as enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, our Freedom to Read. Join us every Sunday afternoon as we watch the first eight Land Before Time movies to celebrate our Summer Reading theme, Unearth a Story. A craft and snacks will be provided.

Tie-Dye Party!
Register for a 30-minute lesson and demonstration on creating your own colorful tie-dye. Participants must bring a white or lightly colored cotton clothing item to dye; the rest of the materials will be supplied by the library. (Registration required)

Paleontology Adventure Day
Join us as we explore paleontology through digging and analyzing fossils and dinosaur bones. We'll learn how to piece together bones by constructing dinosaur skeletons in teams. Finally, amateur paleontologists will create their own fossils out of clay and stamp paint dinosaur tracks. Best suited for kids aged 7 and up. (Registration required)
