Give the Gift of Reading
For the fifth year, Washoe County Library System is launching Give the Gift of Reading, an exciting campaign in support of children’s literacy. In conjunction with our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative, we hope to raise $20,000 this year – enough to purchase 1,000 new children's books for our libraries' collections. Your commitment to sponsor at least one book will help prepare children in our community for an early start in reading and learning. We hope that you will be able to join us in supporting this initiative.

Why does this matter?
Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter kindergarten with the skills necessary for success. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading. Library Director Jeff Scott recognizes the importance of books and reading in our children’s success: “Washoe County Library System is dedicated to helping children succeed by providing a variety of early literacy opportunities for parents and young children. We encourage parents to read to their children every day.”
