Welcome to the Spring Edition of the Washoe County Library Explorer!

In 1966, the Baltimore Orioles won the World Series, The Sound of Music won the Oscar for Best Picture, The Beatles released their classic album Revolver, Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California, Star Trek premiered, Walt Disney died, and the Downtown Reno Library was born.

We’re celebrating the Downtown Reno Library’s 60th anniversary with a series of events, including bomb shelter tours and a Story Time dance party. For more information, see Library News on page 5 and our “Meet a Librarian” interview with Downtown Reno Library Branch Manager Kristen on page 6.

Recently, the Board of Trustees of Washoe County Library System approved an adjustment to the hours of operation for seven library locations, so take a look at our updated hours on page 3.

There are several exciting celebrations throughout the library system this season. First up is Nevada Reading Week, with the mission of “inspiring and instilling the joy and importance of reading across Nevada,” on March 2–6 (see page 14).

The week of April 19–25 is doubly special: It’s National Volunteer Week and National Library Week, with the theme “Find Your Joy;” Mychal Threets, the new host of Reading Rainbow, is this year's honorary chair. Learn more at www.ala.org.

May is Older Americans Month. See page 10 for events for adults and seniors and page 11 for technology classes.

And that’s not all! We’ve got a full calendar of events and programs. There’s Día, a nationwide festival event with arts and crafts, family-friendly activities, and a free performance by Reno Taiko Tsurunokai. See page 14 for more information. And we host amazing event series in conjunction with the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Nevada Historical Society, and more. The fun never stops at your local library!

A gift from the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation to the people of Washoe County, this architectural gem now serves as the urban hub of the 12-branch library system. Designed by architect Hewitt C. Wells, the 43,000-square-foot building boasts skylights, an auditorium, a fountain feature in the lower level pond, and elevated pod-like seating amidst a jungle of plants.

The Downtown Reno Library has received recognition and numerous awards for its unique architecture, including being voted the library with the "coolest interior space." It is listed in the Reno Register of Historic Places and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

Kristen

Caption: "The architect, Hewitt C. Wells, believed the library belonged in a park. He envisioned a serene, quiet setting where people could enjoy reading, and when he couldn't get the library in a park, he brought the park into the library." - Kristen Ryan, Branch Manager, Downtown Reno Library.

Tell us some of the history of the Downtown Reno Library.

The original site for this library was going to be at Riverside Park, now called Barbara Bennett Park. That location was controversial in the ‘60s. Some members of the public worried the library would take a lot of the park acreage. One individual in particular was adamant about not losing the tennis courts. There were also concerns about flooding because of how close the site was to the river. After all that controversy, and amid fears that funding from the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation of Nevada could be lost, the decision was made in 1964 to build at the current location. The architect, Hewitt C. Wells, believed the library belonged in a park. He envisioned a serene, quiet setting where people could enjoy reading, and when he couldn't get the library in a park, he brought the park into the library. Not many libraries have an atrium. A couple of years ago, the American Library Association did an article about the plants in our library. After that article, we had librarians from across the country swing by Reno just to see the plants. Leon from Green Interiors takes care of our plants, and it’s all hand-watered. There is no drip system, which surprises people. Leon’s love for plants comes through when you walk in. He loves these plants like they’re his children.

What’s changed over the years?

When the library first opened, the children’s area was downstairs, and Story Time was held in what is now called the Truckee Room. Construction for the new children’s area began in 2019. We moved it upstairs to make it more accessible for families with strollers, so they can just stroll right on in, and they don’t have to go through the adults’ section or use the elevator. In 2023, we added a family restroom in the children’s area so kids don’t need to go all the way downstairs if they need to use the restroom or the drinking fountain.

How are you going to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Downtown Reno Library?

We’re offering bomb shelter tours to the public in May. After the Cold War, most organizations converted their bomb shelters into storage units. Ours was so wonky that we couldn’t convert it easily, so it’s still original from 1966. We can’t allow minors into the bomb shelter, but anyone 18 and older is welcome to sign up. We’ll host several ’60s-themed activities, like Story Times and book displays. On our actual anniversary date, May 13, we'll keep things low-key since it’s in the middle of the week, but we’ll have snacks and coffee for patrons, and the staff will dress in ’60s clothes. But our big event is going to be after-hours on Saturday, May 9. [See page 5.]

What’s your history with Washoe County Library?

I started my library career as a volunteer back in 2000. I did four hours a week at the Sparks Library. I became a temp in 2002, and then, in 2003, I got hired as an aide. And then I was hired as a Library Assistant II at the North Valleys Library. During the recession, I was reassigned to the Sparks Library. In 2015, I took a promotion to Librarian at the South Valleys Library. In 2019, I transferred to the Downtown Reno Library. During COVID, I became interim manager here at the Downtown Reno Library, and I officially became branch manager in 2021.

What’s a book you like to recommend?

In elementary school, I hated reading. In sixth grade, I came across the book Watership Down. I loved the cartoon. When I discovered the movie was based on a book, I decided to read it. My teacher discouraged me from reading the book. If someone tells me I cannot do something, I'm usually determined to do it anyway, so I read it. That experience shaped how I view our role as librarians. We should not tell people what they can and cannot read. When I read that book, there were so many more details and backstories. The book was so much better than the movie!

What’s a library service you wish more people knew about?

Book a Librarian. [See page 11.] Coming out of the pandemic, we recognized a significant technology divide among our patrons. Many senior citizens were suddenly required to rely on technology for everything — meetings, interviews, applications, Social Security. It’s by appointment only, but we give one-on-one help. With this program, we support the Washoe County strategic plan of serving a vulnerable population, including seniors and unhoused patrons. Librarians help with everything from troubleshooting the Libby app to assisting with resumes, navigating technology, and job applications. We make a difference in people’s lives.
