Welcome to the fall edition of the Washoe County Library Explorer!

School’s back in session, the leaves are turning orange and gold, and what’s that mysterious scent in the air? Could it be pumpkin spice? It must be fall! Here at Washoe County Library, autumn is one of our top-four favorite seasons of all time. Dive into this issue of the Washoe County Library Explorer like it’s a pile of freshly raked leaves to find out why we love it so much. 

To begin the season, September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and this year’s theme is “a library card hits all the right notes.” Stop by your local library location to try something new and explore resources like reservable meeting rooms, technology classes, book groups, online resources, events for all ages, and so much more. It’s the perfect time to sign up for a Washoe County Library card or pick up a replacement card. (We lose ours sometimes, too.) 

Visit one of our 12 library locations (see page 3) or find us out and about in the community at upcoming events like the Northern Nevada Pride parade and festival (September 12), Fiesta on Wells (September 20), and the Day of the Dead festival (November 1).  

In October, don’t miss TeenTober, an annual celebration of teens hosted by libraries across the country. Teens ages 12 to 18 can participate in creepy crafts and fall-themed activities at events like Teen Scene and TeenTober Tuesdays. And be sure to join us on Sunday, October 3, at Young Blood, a teen-oriented art reception hosted by the Holland Project. For more information about TeenTober, see page 13. 

Spellbinders, the world’s largest free international festival of magic, will dramatically reappear at our libraries October 2–4. The Nevada Historical Society's Nevada History on the Go series continues at the Sierra View Library, and the South Valleys Library is this season's home for our popular speaker series from the Historic Reno Preservation Society. Find these and more upcoming events on page 8. 

From October 4–10, Banned Books week celebrates our freedom to read, and more broadly, to access information. This year's theme, “Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read,” is the perfect reminder to exercise your intellectual freedom by trying one of the more than 4,000 books challenged in the United States over the last year. Learn more on page 7.

Participate in the library's strategic planning process

This fall, Washoe County Library invites you to participate in the strategic planning process. In accordance with minimum public library standards for the state of Nevada, Washoe County Library will develop a a written master plan designed to extend five years into the future (NRS 379.003).  

The new strategic plan will identify goals and opportunities to expand services, and serve as a guiding foundation for successful outcomes.

The community is invited to participate by attending strategic planning sessions at multiple library locations. Let's work together to generate a new vision for the library's future!

Northwest Reno Library to reopen late summer

The Northwest Reno Library is excited to welcome patrons back following its May 6 closure to accommodate heating and cooling replacement and a roof retrofit. Stay tuned for an anticipated reopening announcement coming this September.

Lithium battery recycling bins installed at libraries 

Washoe County is partnering with Redwood Materials and Nevada Tech Hub to bring lithium battery recycling bins to several library locations. 

The bins arrived at the Downtown Reno, Sierra View, South Valleys, and Sparks libraries in August. Equipped with heat and activity sensors and a fire suppression system, they provide a safe option for the recycling of household items containing rechargeable lithium batteries. 

The bins are available inside the libraries during regular hours of operation. For library locations and hours, see page 3.

Washoe County Library takes care of business 

Washoe County Library's business book collection has expanded thanks to a $35,000 Library Services and Technology Act grant through the Nevada State Library, Archives & Public Records.

The grant funds have allowed us to curate a robust collection of business-focused ebooks and audiobooks that are tailored to Nevada’s growing economic landscape. Aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, and job seekers who may not have the time or ability to travel to a library will also benefit from decreased wait times for high-demand materials.

Where did you get the inspiration to host Dungeons & Dragons events for teens at the library?

I grew up in comic book stores. There was a comic book store called Next Dimension Comics & Cards right next to the library in Fallon. So, starting in third grade, every day after school I would go to the library and Next Dimension, which was owned by a guy named Chuck, who was a really good guy. I think a lot of how I handle teen programming I learned by osmosis growing up in that environment. I was there until 5 or 6 pm every day after school. It was like a barber shop but for nerdy fantasy-driven kids. You rib each other, but you do it in a friendly way, with the nice camaraderie of a shared hobby. What a lot of teens want is a space where they can, 1, be themselves, and 2, not have the adult talk down to them. Not that you can say whatever the heck you want or treat them exactly like an adult. But a big part of why I loved that space, beyond the comic books and Dungeons & Dragons — and I learned all of it there— was that the owner of the shop treated every customer basically the same. He could be having a conversation with this 55-year-old dude who was like The Simpsons’ Comic Book Guy, and then he would turn to fourth-grade me and talk to me the exact same way.

What do people not understand about teenagers?

For teens, a lot of what they’re looking for is validation. A library program is a great way to give them that validation, but it’s also fun. Just talk to them like they’re people and what they say on the topic matters. Not that you have to agree with them about everything. In fact, it’s better if you don’t agree with them. If you argue with them, they will like you more. I’m not saying you put them down, but actually engage with them. They want an adult to engage with them on their level about the things they like. I taught for a few years. I taught TESL, Teaching English as a Second Language, which is not the same thing as being a classroom teacher. But if you’re in a teaching space with a kid for multiple hours a day, you have to have a degree of separation. A lot of parents do a great job, but even if they engage, they’ll engage with it as a parent: “Do I want my kid doing this?” There’s a wall there — for both good and bad. They have to make boundaries. But if you’re just with a kid for two hours a week at a program? You can engage with them about the things that they like on their level without having to compromise because you’re their teacher or their parent. So you can be an outlet to discuss things. Make jokes. Laugh. And argue with them. They love that. That’s almost universal. Something that a lot of teens don’t get is just an adult who cares about the things they want to talk about and then engages with them about those things. You’re still an authority figure just because you’re an older person, but it lets them know, “Hey, you’re valid. The things you like are totally legitimate.”

What’s a book you like to recommend?

More programs and services that delight, educate, and inform. Washoe County offers amazing opportunities to its residents but also faces large disparities in income and education. To get positive outcomes, we’ll focus on systemwide quality and branch equity, enabling any customer in Washoe County to enter any library and have the same quality experience and opportunity to have their lives transformed.   

What’s a book you like to recommend?

For teens? If a kid is already reading, I can recommend whatever I think fits their personality. Whenever I’m going to give a book recommendation to a teen, I ask, “Well, what do you like?” And I read enough of everything that I can go from there. But a book recommendation for a teen to get them into reading? That’s a little harder. It depends on whether they’d want something that could happen or couldn’t happen. It doesn’t have to be fantasy or science fiction or horror or whatever, but one that is grounded in reality or one that is not. I think Ursula K. Le Guin’s Earthsea series is really good at bridging the gap between juvenile novels and young adult novels. It’s high fantasy, and we have them all at Washoe County Library. Earthsea is so much better than Harry Potter. It’s of similar length, and it also starts simple and gets more complex. Kids can read the first one when they’re 12 or 13, and it progresses really well.For the other group of teens, the realistic group, if they’re not already into reading, I’d probably actually go with a comic book. I’d probably go with something like Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass by Meg Medina or the Lumberjanes series. Burnout by Rebecca Donner and Inaki Miranda. Flamer, by Mike Curato, is a really good one. These are really grounded coming-of-age stories but with comic book graphics to back it up. And then, if they like that format, you can expand it to all sorts of stuff.

What’s a library service you wish more people knew about?

One of the things that people don’t take advantage of with the library is just the idea that if you have a community that wants XYZ, you can talk to us and maybe get that. I know that sounds weird. You can come up to us and say there’s a bunch of us who’d like to have some sort of community program at the library. You can help shape your local library by talking to the people there about what you need.

Each fall, librarians, publishers, authors, and readers of all ages join together to celebrate the freedom to read. Banned Books Week reminds us to take time to look at books that have been challenged across our nation and to reflect on what is lost when these books are removed from shelves and made unavailable to readers. Our community’s children lose the ability to see themselves and families that look like theirs reflected in the books they read, parents lose the opportunity to engage in teachable moments with their kids, and readers of all ages lose the ability to explore the world around them.

Celebrate freedom — read a banned book! In honor of Banned Books Week 2026 and Let Freedom Read Day on October 10, join our Banned Books Reading Challenge.

Nearly 92% of censorship attempts in 2025 were initiated by pressure groups and decision makers swayed by them. This marks a 20-point increase over 2024. (Statistics based on 8,596 total titles targeted for censorship.)
