Defendant Charged with Multiple Counts of Battery with a Deadly Weapon
A Sparks man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison with eligibility of parole after 16 years after pleading guilty to multiple counts.
Troy Kellett, age 50, was charged with instances of Battery with Use of a Deadly Weapon and Battery Resulting in Substantial Bodily Harm, stemming from three separate incidents.
In the afternoon of March 7, 2022, Reno Police arrived at the Atlantis Resort after a report of a battery with a deadly weapon. The victim, a 60-year-old man, was struck in the back of the head while gambling. Video surveillance showed Kellett, without provocation, struck the victim with a rock before leaving the casino. The victim was takes to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where the laceration on his head required several surgical staples.
On March 12, 2022, Reno Police officers responded to the Sands Casino following a report of a battery. When officers arrived, they spoke with the 31-year-old male victim, who was bleeding from a head wound after being hit from behind by a 10-pound rock. The victim was transported to Renown, where he received stitches due to his injuries. During the investigation, police positively identified Kellett as the attacker via video surveillance, when they observed him hit the victim, while the man was at a gaming machine.
The next day, Sparks Police were called to the Nugget Casino following reports of a similar incident, and were told the suspect, identified as Kellett was still in the area. While being interviewed, Kellett attempted to run from the scene before being arrested. During the course of this investigation, it was discovered that Kellett had struck a 42-year-old man in the back of the head with a rock while the pair were inside the casino restroom. The victim was transported to Northern Nevada Medical Center after he had sustained multiple fractures on his skull and had an internal brain bleed.
At the sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Brett Dieffenbach argued to the Honorable Judge Simons that nothing short of the maximum possible sentence would serve to keep the community safe from further random acts violence being perpetrated upon the citizens of Washoe County.
