Grants available for small businesses struggling in pandemic

Small-business grants are still available, deadline October 6

RENO, Nevada (September 17, 2020) -- Small businesses in unincorporated Washoe County can still take advantage of grants designed to alleviate the impacts of COVID-19. The deadline to apply is October 6, and business owners should apply right away before funds run out.

Washoe County is one of eight Nevada counties to participate in the Nevada Association of Counties (NACO) grant program, and small-business owners are encouraged to apply. The funding for the program is from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and will be awarded on an as-needed, first-come, first-served basis.

“As a longtime businessman in this community, I have seen firsthand how the entire community is stronger when businesses are strong and employees are doing well,” Washoe Board of County Commission Chairman Bob Lucey said. “This pandemic has caused local businesses to struggle, but as a county, we are committed to supporting our local businesses and helping those in need. I urge small-business owners to look into this grant program.

The grants can be used for a wide range of needs, including payroll protection to keep staff employed and for the cost to retrofit public areas by installing plexiglass barriers or other protective measures. They can even be used for basic operating costs like utilities and inventory. 

Guidelines and qualifications are listed on the NACO website, and NACO has partnered with the University of Nevada’s Small Business Development Center to assist businesses with the application process. Free and confidential assistance for businesses can be obtained through www.nevadasbdc.org or call 800-240-7094 to make an appointment with a counselor through one of their 13 statewide locations.
