Commissioners hear update from Health District, make proclamations and approve donations

Reno, Nev. April 21, 2020. The following report highlights an important agenda item from the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:

1. COVID-19 Presentation from the Washoe County Health District. The Board of County Commissioners heard an update regarding the COVID-19 healthcare response from the Washoe County Health District Officer, Kevin Dick. He updated Commissioners on the latest case count, hospital bed and ventilator information.

The Health District is encouraging residents to get a risk assessment to see if testing is appropriate. To take a risk assessment, please contact your physician or call the COVID-19 hotline at 775-328-2427, or by filling out this form, or the form in Spanish.

Additionally, Mr. Dick shared the recent data from the Los Alamos National Model which projects there is an 82% chance we reached the peak in Nevada by April 19. If we haven’t yet reached our peak number of daily cases, the model predicts the highest probability that we will reach it this week or the following week.

“It is imperative that we are vigilant about practice social distancing,” said Kevin Dick. “We need to make sure people are wearing face covering, washing hands frequently so we reduce the spread to document a continuing decline. 2. The Board of County Commissioners issue the following proclamations:

Commissioners proclaim April 2020 as Donate Life Month. The proclamation recognizes Nevada Donor Network, the only Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) in Nevada, and their work with the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office and the innovative Tissue Donation Program.
Commissioners proclaim April 2020 as National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month. April is nationally recognized as Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month and the proclamation acknowledges that the Washoe County Human Services Agency (HSA) is actively joining in the national effort to raise awareness. During the first week of April, HSA places hundreds of blue pinwheels outside several Washoe County buildings. The pinwheels represent the joyful, carefree childhood every child deserves.
Commissioners proclaim April 12-19, 2020 as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. Behind every emergency response that takes place in Washoe County there is a team of dedicated, professional Communications Specialist who are now only recently known as the “first” first responder, and the most vital link between our emergency services and citizens. This proclamation honors the Washoe County Communications Specialists who are the lifeblood of information for more than 500 public safety personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing a critical safety service.
Commissioner proclaim April 19-25, 2020 as National Library Week. The proclamation acknowledges the libraries, librarians, library workers and supporters across America to celebrate National Library Week. Libraries have long served as trusted and treasured institutions where people of all ages, interests and backgrounds can come together and learn alongside one another and work to create an equitable society by providing free access to accurate information to all people.

3. The Board of County Commissioners accepted the following donations:

Donation to Washoe County Second Judicial District Court in the form of a bequest of oil paintings, valued in the amount of $25,000 from the estate of Mr. Martin O’Conlon, via its executor and current owner, Mr. Paris Fruscione.
Donation to Washoe County Emergency Management in the amount of $3,000 from the Burning Man organization to offset costs associated with increasing support needs for Burning Man.
Donation to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in the form of twenty dinner gift certificates and two one-night stay gift certificates from the Incline Hyatt Regency, and 540 American Flag lapel pins in the value of $11,880 from a private citizen, and a Sprung Tent Structure and eleven combined air handler, air condition and heating units with an estimated value of $1,213,827 from a private citizen.
Donation to the Washoe County Human Services Agency in the form of various items for senior services with an estimated value of $1,050 and donations in the amount of $102.76, and various items to support child welfare with an estimated value of $2,545 and donations to in the amount of $606 to support child welfare activities.
