Guilty Verdict Against Repeat DUI Offender Secured
The Washoe County District Attorney’s Office has announced that a guilty verdict has been secured in a recent felony Driving Under the Influence (DUI)trial that concluded earlier this week. Jose Alejandro Figueroa, 33, from Reno, was found guilty on Wednesday after a two-day trial in District Court. Sentencing is set for November 18, 2019, and the defendant faces up to 15 years in prison. This is Figueroa’s 5th DUI conviction.
Case Details:
On January 1, 2019 the Reno Police Department (RPD) responded to a report by one of their off-duty officers that he was following a suspected intoxicated driver. The off-duty RPD officer had been leaving the police station when he observed the driver of a passing vehicle fail to maintain a lane and narrowly miss hitting a light pole and nearby parking lot gate. An on-duty RPD patrol officer located the driver of the vehicle and identified him as Figueroa. A subsequent investigation determined that Figueroa was exhibiting signs of intoxication and, when interviewed, he admitted to having recently consumed “2” drinks and smoked marijuana. Figueroa was arrested and this office filed formal criminal charges.
During trial, Deputy District Attorney Christopher Day presented evidence of Figueroa’s dangerous driving, as well as Figueroa’s blood analysis, which showed that Figueroa had nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol and over three times the legal limit of marijuana in his blood while driving.
