Protect Your Home and Property From Wildfire - next two consecutive Saturdays (Free for Washoe County Residents)

Reno, NV – The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) encourages residents to create defensible space and dispose of dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other wildland fuels for free at TMFPD’s Green Waste Collection Days this coming Saturday 11/10, and the following Saturday 11/17.

“Despite the beautiful and cool autumn days, conditions are dry and the wildfire threat remains high,” said Fire Chief Charles A.  Moore.  “Truckee Meadows Fire Green Waste Collection Days offer a proactive opportunity to create defensible space and protect your home and family from fire.”

Defensible space is the buffer created between a building on your property and the wildland area that surrounds it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire.  Defensible space protects homes and property from catching fire, either from direct flame contact or radiant heat.  Defensible space is also important for the protection of firefighters defending your home.

The TMFPD Green Waste Collection program is available to Washoe County residents for FREE, to include residents in the City of Reno and Sparks.  Disposed green waste is reduced to compost and helps air quality levels as an alternative to burning.

Open and pile burning is expected to remain prohibited in Washoe County this fall.  TMFPD’s Green Waste Collection Days offer the best alternative to create defensible space. 

Items that will not be accepted:

Examples of items that cannot be accepted include fresh grass clippings, food, household trash and garbage, construction materials, e-waste, appliances, tires, paint, furniture, batteries or any hazardous materials. Collections will not be accepted from landscape companies or contractors.
