Secretary Cegavske Warns Nevadans of Disinformation as Election Day Approaches

(Carson City, NV; November 2, 2018) – As Election Day for the 2018 General Election approaches, Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske reminds Nevadans to be mindful of disinformation about the election and voting, particularly on social media.  “With the public’s exposure and reliance on social media for information, the potential for widespread disinformation in an effort to confuse voters is greater than ever,” said Secretary Cegavske. “Our office has been working with social media platforms, government agencies, and election security organizations for the last several months to develop protocols with regards to alerting officials of disinformation and removing inaccurate posts as quickly as possible.”

In order to combat disinformation about the election, Nevadans are encouraged to keep in mind the following information:

• Early voting ends today, November 2, in all counties in Nevada.  Please check your sample ballot for locations and closing times.

• Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.  On Election Day, the polls open at 7:00 AM and close at 7:00 PM. Voters who are in line by 7:00 PM on Election Day will be permitted to cast a ballot.

• The deadline to request an absentee ballot was October 30. Completed absentee ballots must be received by your local election official by 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 6.  Absentee ballots received after this deadline will not be counted.

• Nevadans cannot vote via text message, over the phone, or online.  Any information you see offering these methods as an option to vote is false.

• Nevadans are encouraged to seek election and voting information from official sources.  Individuals with concerns regarding what information is accurate can always contact their local election office or the Secretary of State’s Elections Division at 775-684-5705 or nvelect@sos.nv.gov.

If you become of aware of disinformation about the election, either through social media or other sources, you are encouraged to contact the Secretary of State’s Election Division.
