New interactive directory includes all Reno, Sparks and Washoe County parks
RENO, NV – Ever wondered where to take the kids on a hot summer day, or find a park that has a bike trail? The Washoe County Health District’s Chronic Disease Prevention Program has teamed up with Washoe County’s GIS Technology Services to build an interactive regional parks directory promoting park usage in our community.
A central goal of the Chronic Disease Prevention Program is to increase physical activity to reduce the overall chronic disease burden in Washoe County. Being physically active can help prevent many unhealthy conditions and illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults (age 18-64) need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, while youth (age 6-17) need at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day. “Focusing on local urban parks and open spaces has been shown to increase community physical activity levels and parks are a great and inexpensive place to have fun and get your daily dose of physical activity,” said Washoe County District Board of Health Chair Kitty Jung.
Until now, there had not been an easy way to find a park in our community. Instead park information was separated by jurisdiction and could be viewed on their respective websites. The new interactive directory now includes all parks in the Reno, Sparks and Washoe County all in one directory. Residents and visitors can search for park by amenity, name or location to identify a park that meets their needs. The directory also includes a trail finder for residents to explore the area and view the scenery of Northern Nevada through hiking, biking, snowshoeing or horseback riding.
