October is Fire Prevention Month
Reno, Nev. Oct. 1, 2018 - The Board of Fire Commissioners for the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) recently adopted a proclamation recognizing October 2018 as Fire Prevention Month, urging all Washoe County residents to be aware of their surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergency, and support public safety activities and initiatives of TMFPD’s fire and emergency services.
The Fire District plans to host open houses at four fire stations on Saturday, October 13 that will include public tours of the stations, fire engines, and apparatus. The public can meet and talk with the firefighter crews at each station. Participants will be eligible for a drawing for one of 20 Emergency “Go Bags” equipped with emergency and survival items in the event of an evacuation from a wildland fire, or other disaster situation.
“Fire Prevention Month gives us an opportunity to ask our citizens to be mindful of protecting themselves, their family, and loved ones from dangerous fires,” said TMFPD Fire Chief Charles Moore. “You are the first and best line of defense. Create defensible space to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire.” Defensible space is the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it. “Creating an evacuation plan is also essential in the event you need to evacuate. Developing a plan at the time of a fire is too late,” added Chief Moore. “And don’t forget to change your batteries in smoke detectors every six months.”
