Commissioners recognize Fire Prevention Month – October 2018

Reno, Nev. Sept. 18, 2018 – To follow are highlights from today’s monthly Board of Fire Commissioners Meeting of the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD):

Fire Prevention Month - The Board of Fire Commissioners adopted a proclamation recognizing October 2018 as Fire Prevention Month, urging all Washoe County residents to be aware of their surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergency, and support public safety activities and initiatives of TMFPD’s fire and emergency services.

The Fire District plans to host open houses at four fire stations on Saturday, October 13 that will include public tours of the stations, fire engines, and apparatus.  Participants will be eligible for a drawing for one of 20 Emergency “Go Bags” equipped with emergency and survival items in the event of an evacuation from a wildland fire, or other disaster situation. The bags are designed for a family of four and equipped with emergency provisions for up to 72 hours; to include a first-aid kit, food bars, water, solar radio, and a Mayday flashlight.

District Facilities Master Plan - TMFPD Fire Chief Charles Moore provided an overview on the District’s facilities plan. Discussions include the needs for possible updated stations such as in the Hidden Valley area, as well as other stations that need rehabilitation, consolidation, or relocation.  As an example, Chief Charles Moore is reviewing the current location of Station 13 in Stead, and studying dividing the station into two; one that would be located in Lemmon Valley, and the other in Silver Knolls.  The planning process will move forward, and will include analyzing data of emergency responses from the surrounding areas of each existing station.

Fire Prevention Specialists Position - Commissioners approved an additional fire prevention specialist position for the Fire Prevention Division of TMFPD for a total staff of four.  With the current building growth and increasing workload, this new position will be more responsive to the growing needs of development throughout the Fire District, and aims to improve the time it takes to review building plans and inspections, and other tasks to include fire investigations and public education initiatives.

Smoke Alarm Grant - Commissioners accepted a grant award of 100 smoke alarms from First Alert’s Town/Gown Fire Safety Community Service Project that will be used to support TMFPD’s fire prevention initiatives during Fire Prevention Month, October 2018. This donation was secured in partnership with Truckee Meadows Community College through TMFPD volunteer Randi Hunewell.
