Open Burning is Prohibited

Fire threat remains high

Reno, Nev. July 2, 2018. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) reminds citizens that open burning season is closed.  It is strictly prohibited to burn debris, dry or dead vegetation, or any combustible material.  There are no exceptions, and permits are not being issued for any pile burnings in the Truckee Meadows area.  The fire threat remains high, and the Truckee Meadows is anticipating a number of Red Flag days. 

“This summer will be hot and dry, and we continue to ask all our residents to be fire safe, and not engage in any controlled or open burning in or around your property,” said Fire Chief Charles Moore.  “Open burning puts you and your neighbor’s lives and property at risk.”

Additionally, those who are burning hinder valuable fire and rescue resources. The Fire District has responded to many recent calls from citizens who report seeing smoke from structure fires and upon responding, discover the smoke was created by an open or pile burn. 

As an alternative to burning, TMFPD will offer another Green Waste Collection Day this fall to dispose of dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other wildland fuels in an effort to create a defensible space to protect homes and property for wildfires.
