Washoe County receives two awards for financial reporting and budget

Reno, Nev. May 15, 2018. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting.

1. Washoe County receives two nationally-recognized awards in Budget and Financial Reporting. The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence to Washoe County in Financial Reporting for the comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Washoe County has been formally acknowledged for receiving this prestigious award for the past 36 consecutive years.

In addition, the GFOA awarded Washoe County with a second award, the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2017-18 county budget. To receive the award, nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentations must be met. The budget award reflects the commitment to the highest principles of governmental budgeting. This year’s recognition marks 16 years Washoe County has received this award.

“We work diligently to ensure excellence in every aspect of fiscal responsibility, budgeting practices, transparency and professionalism in financial reporting. I am proud our talented staff team has received this recognition, which acknowledges our long-standing dedication and accountability to our community,” said Christine Vuletich, Assistant County Manager. 

2. Commissioners accept a generous grant award from Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation. Washoe County Bartley Ranch Regional Park is home to the Robert Z. Hawkins Amphitheater, which receives over 18,000 visitors annually. Due to a long-standing relationship, county staff requested the upgrade of the sound system for $52,394.76 and was awarded by the Foundation on March 19, 2018.

3. Board of County Commissioners issue proclamations. The following proclamations honor key dates and happenings in our community and around the nation:

• Board of County Commissioners proclaim May 2018 as Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month. The proclamation encourages citizens to stay vigilant and prepare for wildfire throughout the year.
• Board of County Commissioners proclaim May 2018 as Lake Tahoe Wildfire Awareness Month. The proclamation calls residents to be educated and take action in the Lake Tahoe Basin to reduce the wildfire threat and prepare throughout the year.
• Board of County Commissioners proclaim May 20-26, 2018 as National Public Works Week. The proclamation celebrates public works professionals throughout the country and the men and women of Washoe County who serve our community by focusing on infrastructure, facilities and services for healthy, thriving communities.

4. Board of County Commissioners accept the following donations:

• Donations to the Human Services Agency in the amount of $3,652.50 on behalf of generous businesses, organizations and individuals for Washoe County Senior Services to support a growing senior population.  
• Donation to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office of military surplus equipment valued at $12,000 on behalf of The Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office to support the Honor Guard.
• Donations to Washoe County Regional Animal Services in the amount of $10,991.30 on behalf of generous community members for the use of the humane care and treatment of sick, injured, stray, abandoned, or at-risk animals.
• Donation from the City of Sparks in the amount of $5,000 for a regional Flood Response Action Plan.

“I want to thank the generous citizens of Washoe County for their continued support,” said Vice-Chair, Kitty Jung. “We can’t do it without everyone pulling together.”
