Washoe County Commission selects new Chair and Vice Chair

Reno, Nev. Jan. 9, 2018. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting.

1. Selection of New Commission Chair and Vice-Chair for upcoming year. Washoe County Board of County Commissioners voted today to select Commissioner Marsha Berkbigler as Chair for 2018. Commissioners also selected Commissioner Kitty Jung, as Commission Vice-Chair for 2018.

“We had a long year of both challenges and successes in 2017, and I am proud that we have served diligently as Commissioners and each of us brought a unique skill set to this board,” remarked outgoing Commission Chair, Commissioner Bob Lucey.

The motions for the selection of the Chair and Vice-Chair passed unanimously.

“I thank this Commission for selecting me to serve as the Chair, and I also thank Commissioner Jung for being willing to take this positon as Vice-Chair, it will be fun working with you,” said incoming Commission Chair, Marsha Berkbigler.  

2.  County Commissioners approve funding for senior meals and substance abuse treatment. County Commissioners approved a $48,731 Nutrition Services Incentive Program grant from the Aging and Disability Services Division to help cover the cost to deliver and serve seniors food through the Home Delivered Meals program and at Washoe County’s congregate meal sites. The Home Delivered Meal program serves more than 376,254 meals a year. In addition to delivering meals to homebound seniors, the County’s Human Services Agency (HSA) also operates ten congregate meal sites in the area. See a complete list.

In addition, County Commissioners approved a $161,267 grant to provide substance abuse treatment and services, including outpatient, intensive outpatient, low-intensity residential care, opioid treatment and withdrawal management for clients.

The grant is provided by the State of Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Behavioral Health Wellness and Prevention.
