Sheriff's Office reminds residents about changes to congested area ordinances

Important information to know as upland game seasons are approaching.

Hunting seasons for Dove, Grouse and Crow will open in Washoe County on September 1 and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office reminds hunters, and others who recreate in the outdoors, about county ordinances governing the discharge of firearms and recent changes to the county’s “congested area” boundaries.

Everyone who plans to recreate in these areas should familiarize themselves with these restrictions and maintain awareness of activity taking place in their surroundings while in the outdoors. An informational brochure prepared by the Sheriff’s Office is available by following this link.

The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office take residents' safety seriously and will issue citations to anyone found discharging a firearm within the prohibited areas and to anyone found discharging firearms other than shotguns or air guns in the restricted areas.

Wildland fire danger is very high this time of year and the Sheriff’s Office also reminds all hunters and shooters that a small spark can quickly lead to a large fire. A list of tips for shooting responsibly and reducing wild fire risk is attached to this press release.
