Update on Jackpot Fire near Cold Springs and Silver Knolls

Fire is 20 percent contained with about 1,700 total acres burned.

Reno, Nevada. Aug. 7, 2016. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) Chief Charles Moore said the Jackpot Fire, which started at around 8 p.m. Saturday, is 20 percent contained after it burned about 1,700 acres and threatened about 50 structures near Cold Springs and Silver Knolls.

"Containment on the fire is growing quite rapidly," Chief Moore said. "Residents who evacuated due to the fire are now cleared to return."

The fire burned close to structures near Red Rock Road, about 3-4 miles north Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Department, but nothing was lost. Cold temperatures, increased humidity and low wind gusts helped crews battle the fire. The Jackpot Fire burned near homes along Moonstone Lane and Argosy, Alpha Butte, Columbia Hill and Goldstone Roads.

Moore said command will change from TMFPD to the Bureau of Land Management today. In addition to local and federal hand crews, air support will be provided by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office RAVEN Helicopter. BLM will also provide air support.

No official cause for the fire has been determined. BLM is investigating.
