Animal Services reminds residents to check the shelter for lost pets

Tips to help find your pet.

Reno, Nevada. July 5, 2016.  Every year, Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) sees a sharp increase in stray dog calls during the 24-hour period around July 4 and July 5 as animals attempt to flee from the noisy fireworks. 

“Every year animals flood into our doors during the July 4^th week ,” Regional Animal Services Director Shyanne Schull said. “If your pet became frightened from the commotion of the holiday, there are several ways to help you and your pet reunite. “

To help get lost pets home, Regional Animal Services offers the following tips:

• Have your pet microchipped and licensed
• If your pet becomes lost, file a lost report with Regional Animal Services
• Check the website and search lost and found
• Visit the shelter to search for your lost pet  
• Canvass your neighborhood
• Run an ad in the paper and use apps use social media

If you find a roaming dog, contact Animal Services dispatch at 775-322-3647 and request an officer to pick it up. Officers will scan the dog for a microchip and contact the owners to reunify the dog with its owner.

Regional Animal Services encourages all pet owners to make sure their pets have identification tags, are licensed and microchipped just in case they do get lost. This will expedite getting pets and their families reunited.
