Highlights from meeting with Washoe County Commissioners

Commissioners proclaim June 2015 as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

Reno, Nevada. June 16, 2015. The following report highlights several important agenda items from the Washoe County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday, June 16, 2015. The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 2015 as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month and June 21, 2015 as The Longest Day. The goal of the proclamation is to provide information about challenges people with dementia or Alzheimer’s and their caretakers deal with on a daily basis. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death impacting the lives of millions of people. The Alzheimer’s Association continues to work hard to get rid of Alzheimer’s through advanced research and reduce the risk of dementia through promotion of brain health.

Commissioner Vaughn Hartung (District 4) said, “The tsunami surrounding Alzheimer’s disease is coming as this continues to affect more and more people every day.  We need to be prepared as a community to support it.”

 To help raise awareness about a disease so many researchers are working toward coming up with a cure for, the Board asks the public to wear purple in June for all those affected by Alzheimer’s.

The Board also proclaimed the following:

• June 20, 2015, as Incline Village Library Day
• July 2015, as Parks and Recreation Month
• July 2015 as Bear Logic Month

The Board accepted the following donations:

• A cash donation from Jane and George Holman in memory of Grandma Betty to support the juvenile programs at Wittenberg Hall.
• A Freightliner Type I Engine from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
• Accepted military equipment for the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office to be used by the Detention Response Team, K9 Units, Special Weapons and Tactics and Search and Rescue.
• Accepted cash donations for Social Services to benefit children in care and families who are clients.
