WCDA secures two lengthy sentences

Defendants guilty of multiple counts of Robbery, Battery, and Assault

Two Reno men have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after previously being found guilty by a Washoe County jury of multiple counts of Robbery with a Deadly Weapon, Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

Montana Munday, age 34, was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Connie Steinheimer to 60 years in prison with parole eligibility after 16 years. Munday is also serving an additional 20-year sentence on a separate robbery conviction. Jeremy Chaplin, age 31, was sentenced to 20 years in prison with eligibility for parole after 5 and a half years.

The case began in October of 2018, when Reno Police officers responded to a motel on S. Virginia St., following reports of a shooting. When police arrived, they found a 41-year-old man with gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg. The victim told officers that he had been shot following a drug deal that went wrong. During the investigation, it was discovered that the victim had gotten into a car with the two defendants and a woman to buy drugs. Both Chaplin and Munday pointed guns at the victim, with Munday demanding that the victim give him his money. Munday then shot the victim in the abdomen as the victim scrambled to escape the vehicle. Video surveillance showed the victim falling out of the car and it speeding away.  However, Chaplin then stopped the vehicle to allow Munday to exit and shoot at the victim four more times, striking them in the leg. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries that still greatly affect him today.

During sentencing, Chief Deputy District Attorney Matt Lee argued that the actions of both defendants that day, along with Munday’s callous disregard for human life, warranted the lengthy prison sentences.
