Last day for permitted spring 2019 burning is Sunday
Reno, Nev. April 29, 2019. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) will end the permitted spring burn season effective Monday, May 6.
Sunday, May 5 will be the last day for permitted burning, if weather allows and until further notice. Citizens that burn after the close of the permitted burn season may be subjected to fines.
“With the increasing warming temperatures, wildland fuels are drying out and increasing the threat of wildfires,” said Fire Chief Charles Moore. “We appreciate our residents’ efforts to protect our community by clearing properties of excess vegetation, and creating defensible space around their homes. We also thank Washoe County Air Quality for their cooperation to permit burning,” he said.
May is Wildfire Awareness Month. This Saturday, May 4 is Junk the Junipers, an opportunity to dispose of landscape and yard debris from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. at two locations; Nevada Division of Forestry, 885 Eastlake Blvd. in Washoe Valley, AND 11525 Red Rock Road, Truckee Meadow’s Fire Station #430 – Silver Lake. For more information on Junk the Junipers, call 775.336.0261.
Pile burning is only allowed on properties ½ acre in size or larger, and that reside outside the Truckee Meadows Hydrographic Basin.
In order to burn, residents must file a 2019 Burn Permit with TMFPD. Permits can be accessed online, or at the Fire District’s Administrative Office, 1001 E. 9th Street, Building D-231, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Before burning, call the Fire District burn hotline at 326-6000, Option 3, to determine whether or not it is a permissible burn day; or go to the District’s home page at www.tmfpd.us. If it is not a permissible burn day, burning will not be allowed under any circumstances.
Residents must be aware of rules and regulations to burn in the Truckee Meadows. On permissible burn days, burning can begin at sunrise, and must end by 2 p.m.
Annual burn permits are no longer valid. Call 775.328.6000 for more information, or email info@tmfpd.us.
