Initiative takes stride to reduce pedestrian fatalities

Re-posted on behalf of Northern Nevada Vision Zero Task Force

Reno, Nevada (November 26, 2018) – Members of the Northern Nevada Vision Zero Task Force are asking for the community’s help with a pedestrian safety survey. The task force will be out on the streets in high-pedestrian-traffic areas of Reno and Sparks on November 26-30 asking pedestrians to take the quick survey in person. The survey is also available online in English and in Spanish. Surveys can be submitted until January 4, 2019.

The Northern Nevada Vision Zero Task Force is a regional partnership focusing on pedestrian safety in our community. Their vision is to work together to keep everyone safe on our roads. They will be focusing on four focus areas in our region, including Midtown Reno, West 4th Street, the University District and Downtown Sparks. The survey data that is collected will be used to identify and prioritize safety improvements in each of these four areas. The task force will also use the information gathered in these four areas and apply it to community-wide safety efforts.

The multi-jurisdictional Task Force is comprised of staff members from the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County, the City of Reno, the Reno Police Department, the City of Sparks, the Sparks Police Department, Washoe County, the Nevada Department of Public Safety, the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, the University of Nevada – Reno, University of Nevada – Las Vegas, Washoe County School District, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Highway Patrol, Washoe County Health District and REMSA.

The task force, with the support of local leaders, has made a commitment to take action to bring the number of fatalities on our roadways to zero. The task force will make equitable, data-driven, and transparent decisions to improve safety throughout our community. By partnering together to make roads and sidewalks safer for pedestrians, we make our roads safer for everyone.
