Second West Nile collection confirmed in South Reno

Insecticide fogging will continue in order to combat mosquito activity

Reno, NV - The Washoe County Health District will continue insecticide fogging in response to a second positive West Nile Virus mosquito collection. The positive collection was found in the Butler Ranch/Donner Springs area according to health officials.

The Washoe County Health District will increase insecticide fogging in the vicinity beginning August 16 and continue treatments throughout the week. The Health District will also continue extensive surveillance of mosquito collections through trapping to monitor increased mosquito activity.

Health officials remind people to take steps to prevent being bitten by mosquitos that may possibly carry disease.  These steps include:

• Wear pants and long sleeve shirts during early morning and early evening hours when mosquitos are active,
• Use insect repellent both on clothing and on skin,
• Remove standing water around your homes or apartments where mosquitos can breed,
• Make sure door and window screens are in good repair with no tears or holes, and
• Use mosquito fish in troughs and water features.
