Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks hosts first of its kind veterans training
Reno, Nevada
July 14, 2016
Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks hosted a first of its kind Veterans Training for members of his office, including Deputy District Attorneys, DA Investigators and Victim Advocates. The training was presented by representatives from the Department of Veteran Affairs and its Reno Vet Center. Also presenting was the Honorable Judge Steven Kosach, who retired in 2012 from the Nevada Second Judicial District Court. Those presenting had distinguished military careers. Judge Kosach in particular served with distinction in the US Army and in Vietnam. During his military career he was awarded the Silver Star for heroism, three Bronze Stars for valor, the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.
The training was brought in by the District Attorney’s Office in order to continue to promote a better understanding of the diverse community it serves. It focused on military culture and the transition into civilian life. Topics included education on the military combat experience and the challenges some of our veterans face when transitioning back into the community. Additional subject matter included post traumatic distress and improving the understanding of those who are called on to engage with veterans. Information was also provided on the resources available to veterans through the Reno Vet Center.
Today’s training was a unique educational experience for District Attorney’s Office staff. Following the presentation, DA Hicks commented “it was an honor to host this presentation and bring attention and understanding to the military culture and the challenges that can be faced by veterans. I know all the attendees from my office benefited immensely from the presentation.”
