Create unity and get your community prepared for wildfire season.
Reno, Nevada. May 6, 2016. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) is reminding residents that May is Wildfire Awareness Month.
A wildfire can move quickly. Preparation and planning are key components for the safety of your family and home in the event of a wildfire in your community. It is important that everyone works together to prepare.
“Creation of defensible and survivable space is the most important thing you can do to prepare your home for wildfire.” TMFPD Fire Marshal Amy Ray said. “Residents working together to fire-adapt their community will make it a safer place to live and provide a better chance for homes to survive a wildfire event.”
It is easy to prepare for an evacuation in case of a wildfire event or other emergency in the community. Preparing a kit with items such glasses, prescription medications for people and pets, and copies of important documents will allow residents to evacuate quickly. Residents are encouraged to sign up for Code Red to receive regional alerts when there is the need for an evacuation in a wildfire event. Visit the Washoe County website for information on regional alerts and to sign up for Code Red at https://www.washoecounty.us/em/RegionalAlerts.php .
