District Attorney Announces Life Sentence for Child Lewdness Case

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks has announced that a Sparks man has been sentenced to a term of life in prison with the possibility of parole for his role in an October, 2013 lewdness with a child case.  The defendant will serve a minimum of 10 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

Jericho James Brioady 36 (DOB 11/22/79) from Sparks was sentenced on Monday, April 11, 2016 by the Honorable Judge Scott Freeman on two counts of Lewdness with a Child Under the Age of 14.  Brioady was found guilty in January of this year after a five day jury trial held in Washoe County District Court.  He was sentenced to a term of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years for each of the two counts.  When paroled on the life sentence, Brioady will be subjected to lifetime supervision by the Division of Parole and Probation and will have to register with law enforcement as a sex-offender. 

The case against Brioady began in October, 2013 when the Sparks Police Department (SPD) received a report of a sexual assault of a 12 year old female victim involving Brioady.  SPD detectives began an investigation into two separate incidents in which Brioady was suspected of inappropriately touching the female victim and forcing her to touch him and commit oral sex.  Based on interviews and evidence collected during the investigation, Brioady was arrested and the District Attorney’s Office filed criminal charges against him.

At the sentencing, the victim provided an emotional and compelling victim impact statement to the Judge asking for the harshest sentence under the law while explaining that this incident has left her depressed, distant from family and friends, and struggling in school. 

District Attorney Hicks stated, “My Office continues to see the effects of these crimes on young victims and this has been a driving force behind the development of our Child Advocacy Center.  It is fitting that this harsh sentence was delivered during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, which is dedicated to empowering victims and restoring their hope”.
