Nevada Flood Awareness Week

Governor Sandoval declares Nevada Flood Awareness Week.

CARSON CITY, NV. Nov. 3, 2015. Governor Brian Sandoval has declared this November 1 – 7, Nevada Flood Awareness Week. Members of the Nevada Flood Awareness Committee, working with local communities, have scheduled series of events, activities and exhibits to raise awareness among northern and rural Nevadan’s that serious flooding occurs regularly and that there are steps individuals can take to mitigate the risk.

“Our goal is to create flood resilient communities in Nevada that encourage protection of life, property, water quality, environmental values and the preservation of natural floodplain functions.

“In Northern Nevada, our biggest floods occur during the winter. Historically, Nevada’s northern Rivers flood about every 10 to 15 years. Recently, we have been reminded that flash flooding can occur at any time. Knowing what to do before, during and after a flood can save lives, protect pets and help minimize property damage,” says Rob Palmer, Nevada’s Floodplain Manager. 
  

Events include:

• November 1: Carson City  - North Carson Walmart, 3200 Market Street , from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
• November 2: Battle Mountain Civic Center,  625 S. Broad Street, from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.
• November 4: Yerington/Lyon County, Fire Station118 S. Main Street, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
• November 5: Gardnerville, Douglas County Community & Senior Center, North Room 1329 Waterloo Lane, from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.   
• November 7 & 8: Reno Sparks Convention Center (in the Reno Fall Home & Lifestyle Show) from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday.
