Summer Reading Program begins on May 1. Register online today.

The Summer Reading Program runs from May 1-July 31 at Washoe County libraries.  Reading programs bolster skills, are free, convenient and fun.

The 2015 Summer Reading Program will feature the theme “Every Hero Has a Story” for children, teens, and adults.

For the first time this year, participants can sign up and log reading online at www.washoecountylibrary.us/summerreading.  Time spent reading adds up to free books, prizes, and entries to monthly drawings for fantastic donated grand prizes like skiing, movies, museum passes and more! There will also be lively, entertaining and educational programs for kids and families. All programs are free of charge.

While kids think they are having a great time, educators know that informal reading increases children’s reading skills.  Studies abound that show the direct relationship between reading and academic gains.

“Reading programs help keep kids engaged with learning in the most fun ways which is especially important during the summer break,” says Beate Weinert, Washoe County Library Programs and Community Collaborations Coordinator. “We invite readers of all ages to join us at the library this summer.”

Community donors include Cinemark (Park Lane, Riverside and Sparks), Clorox Company Foundation, Costco, Creations by Sally Ann, Dermody Properties Foundation, Eldorado Hotel Casino, Erwin Family, Fleischmann Planetarium, Friends of Washoe County Library, Grand Sierra Resort, Hidden Valley Manufacturing, Kinder Morgan Foundation, Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, Nevada Museum of Art, NV Energy Foundation, Raising Cane’s, Raleys NickelAid Program, RockSport Indoor Climbing Gym, Scheels, Tahoe Donner Ski Area, Wild Island, and Yogurt Beach.

“We are so thankful for all the organizations who have donated to the Reading Program,” says Jennifer Oliver, Public Information Officer.  “The show of support demonstrates the generosity
of this community.”
